“Through this work, I channel the power of freedom and what it looks like to just be, and live without being told what to do or how to do it.”
On Saturday, April 26th we had our second artist talk of the year. The speaker was Raven George, the gallery’s exhibiting artist for March and April. This was the last day of her exhibit Wildflower Joy.
The video above is a recording of the talk, including slideshow images. You can also see a livestreamed version on our Instagram.

Through her words and art, Raven George is courageously vulnerable. She invites us to nurture our inner child and, in turn, that of others.
As I see it, Raven George's art fits right in with the legacy of women's and gender studies and Black feminist epistemology in particular, because it emphasizes the power of wisdom, sisterhood, and self-love.
Similar to our first artist talk, Raven was introduced by Dr. Lisa Huebner of The Women’s and Gender Studies Collection. We’re partnering with them for our artist talks to celebrate the Year of Yin.
Raven George said a lot of beautiful things during her talk, and I encourage you to listen to the recording as you would a podcast. I would like to highlight one particular quote:
“I think I had a power that I wasn't always aware of… of being able to make space for people to be seen and heard and, most importantly, felt.”
