Introducing artwork spotlights! This is a series that will showcase some specific works included in our rotating exhibits.
I started posting these on our Instagram page at the start of this year during Hannah Zartman’s exhibit, as well as our following artist, Raven George. Now, I am picking up with the current exhibit, Pushing Up Daisies.
I understand that not everyone enjoys reading the descriptions in art museums and galleries, but I believe they can be helpful in contextualizing artwork. They are a part of the art’s story—and the exhibit at large. These artwork spotlights are a way to highlight the exhibiting artist’s descriptions and quotes from their exhibit statement.
While I cannot feature all of the works in each exhibit, I try to be intentional in choosing which ones to spotlight. You’ll have to visit in person to see them all!
Here is a spotlight from Shayna Parker’s exhibit.
I’ve chosen a subject I rarely stray from: flowers. Nature’s gift of color, flowers represent growth, fragility, tenderness, and beauty. They often represent people I love.
Title: Where Joy Grows
Dimensions: 32in x 40in
Medium: Oil, Acrylic, Ink, Oil pastel, and Chalk pastel on canvas
Price: $2,000
This background began over two years ago as an experiment in colorful wash techniques. After completing only the first layer, the canvas sat untouched — waiting — until I revisited it and intuitively transformed it into one of my favorite abstract foundations.
Inspired by a playful exploration of scale, and sharing my mother's love for zinnias, I realized the vibrant palette was the perfect match for these joyful blooms. Choosing to move away from realism, I amplified the colors, allowing the painting to fully express my passion for color, energy, and — perhaps — a little bit of my chaos.
Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for more.
