The day is almost here. Saturday, our Pollinteers will be out at The Longview Farm planting the pollinator habitat we’ve been preparing since June.
If you missed our earlier updates, here’s what’s happened so far. This summer, volunteers rolled plastic over a patch of ground to clear it. The ground is now clear and ready for seed. This weekend is when it starts turning into a habitat.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll walk the habitat and scatter handfuls of native wildflower seed. That’s it. You don’t need gardening experience, tools, or a green thumb. If you can walk and toss seed, you can help.
Fall is a good time to plant native seed. As the ground freezes and thaws over the winter, the seed gets pressed into the soil without anyone digging. By spring, it’s in place and ready to sprout. Next year, this patch should be full of flowers for bees, butterflies, and birds.
Kids are welcome
This is a good one for families. Kids are great at scattering seed, and it’s an easy way to show them where flowers come from and why pollinators matter. Come back in the spring and look for what you planted together.
