Artwork spotlights showcase some of the wonderful pieces featured in our rotating exhibits.
Each artwork has a backstory that goes beyond its sensory impact. There is the inspiration, technique, process, message, journey to arrive at the final product—all of which make its context. When we view artwork in galleries and museums, we do so for only a few minutes, but the history of that piece goes much deeper.
That is why it is important to hear what the artist has to say—or write.
The following is a spotlight from our current exhibit, “Pushing Up Daisies” by Shayna Parker, including the artist’s own words.

“This is a significant piece in the [Pushing Up Daisies] collection. On the one hand, it is a reflection on the conservative residents of Chester County, Pennsylvania. It invites those who value tradition to explore the abstract, in art as well as life.”
I often joke that my art doesn't quite fit the local taste—one that is deeply rooted in the legacy of landscape painters like Andrew Wyeth. After reflecting on this—and many conversations later—I decided to engage with his work directly. Using earth tones, which is an unusual choice for me, I strived to remain true to my scenic-inspired style while creating something accessible to a more traditional lens.
Learning to Love is one in a collection of five works that interpret Wyeth paintings in true Shayna Parker fashion. These pieces act as both homage and experiment, honoring a regional icon while asserting the artist’s own voice.
Learning to Love embodies themes of acceptance and unity, showcasing the local farmland and historic stone architecture of Chester County. It strives to connect traditional elements with contemporary art. Additionally, it represents the intersection of my identity and surroundings. The work touches on the struggle of feeling alienated while resisting conformity—all while seeking a sense of belonging.
“This painting is also an attempt to accept my life and community in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The open barn door signifies my readiness to find contentment—a home—complimented by the sunflowers which represent peace and joy.”
